Europe Must Make a Choice

The European Union has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the race to net zero. As policymakers enact ambitious decarbonisation targets, EU cleantech innovators are paving the way for a new climate and industrial leadership. To seize this leadership, the EU must learn to scale up its clean technologies and create the conditions for wide adoption and a just transition.
Our new series of events is bridging the gap between the innovation and policy worlds. Each quarter, cleantech CEOs and investors share the stage with leading policymakers to make the most of the decade of action.

One year into a new political mandate, Europe stands at a crossroads. With war still raging in Ukraine, a global trade war kicking off, and economic stagnation, the EU looks smaller than the sum of its 27 parts. Plagued by high energy costs, fragmented markets and Chinese overcapacity, European industry is locked in a downward spiral, unable to invest in its own future. What Mario Draghi described as a « slow agony » has never felt closer.

Yet at the same time, Europe has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to seize. Large investors are looking to diversify away from the US. Political support for the rise of clean industry has never been higher. And world-class cleantech innovators are bringing revolutionary solutions to market - despite limited funding, lengthy bureaucracy and unfair competition from outside the EU.

Europe must  choose: lean in and lead, particularly in clean industry, or risk being led. To lead would bring daunting challenges: we would need to re-invent ourselves, act decisively and turn our bureaucratic institutions into nimble supporters of an industrial renaissance. Not to lead would mean giving up our dual climate and industrial leadership, and losing the resources to sustain our social contract.

In this make or break moment, Cleantech for Europe Summit 2025 will gather the highest levels of policy and cleantech representatives to chart a common path to leadership through reindustrialisation. The Summit is an invite-only event, limited to 150 participants, and focuses on high-level discussions.

Opening Panel: Europe's Moment

Over the past decade, Europe has become a cleantech innovation powerhouse, developing and validating most of the technologies we need to decarbonise, ensure our energy resilience and give us a shot at industrial leadership. However, we are still struggling to scale, industrialise and deploy these technologies massively. The Clean Industrial Deal announced in President Von der Leyen’s Political Guidelines is a critical opportunity to meet this moment.

Panel: Creating Demand for EU Cleantech Manufacturing

Earlier this month, Mario Draghi released a pivotal report on the Future of European Competitiveness. The report highlights that the EU struggles to deploy clean technologies at scale. Unlike China and the US, Europe lacks a decisive and comprehensive industrial and trade strategy to maintain its competitive edge while pursuing decarbonization. In this session, we will discuss how to build a “Made in Europe” cleantech industry.

Last year’s event brought together leaders in policy, cleantech and investment, and focused on how to urgently scale Europe’s cleantech manufacturing sector. The Summit opened with a keynote by European Parliament Vice-President Martin Hojsík and featured numerous panels and keynotes where cleantech and political leaders shared their insights on how to best implement the Clean Industrial Deal. Cleantech for Europe also announced that eleven of Europe’s most innovative cleantech companies have joined our Scale-up Coalition.
