Europe has entered a state of permanent crisis

The European Union has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the race to net zero. As policymakers enact ambitious decarbonisation targets, EU cleantech innovators are paving the way for a new climate and industrial leadership. To seize this leadership, the EU must learn to scale up its clean technologies and create the conditions for wide adoption and a just transition.
Our new series of events is bridging the gap between the innovation and policy worlds. Each quarter, cleantech CEOs and investors share the stage with leading policymakers to make the most of the decade of action.

Join the conversation at #CleantechforEurope
From a pandemic to war on the continent, to repeated energy crises, to the fall of the post-war world order, the EU’s fate seems to be dictated by world events outside of its control. But this lack of agency comes from decades of under-investing in Europe: in our technological sovereignty, in our defense, and in our union. We urgently need to acknowledge the scale of the challenge, and to do all it takes to take back control of our destiny.
In this quest for a stronger Europe, clean technologies are our first line of defense. A homegrown cleantech industry can protect us from future energy crises. It can decentralize our energy system, making it harder to attack. And it can provide the industrial leadership jobs needed for our society to prosper. At Cleantech for Europe Summit 2026, we will gather the EU’s top business, policy and thought leaders to chart a common path to a stronger, cleaner European industry.

Opening Panel: To Lead or Not to Lead

Over the past decade, Europe has become a cleantech innovation powerhouse, developing and validating most of the technologies we need to decarbonise, ensure our energy resilience and give us a shot at industrial leadership. However, we are still struggling to scale, industrialise and deploy these technologies massively. The Clean Industrial Deal announced in President Von der Leyen’s Political Guidelines is a critical opportunity to meet this moment.

Panel: A Strategy for Cleantech 'Made in Europe'

Earlier this month, Mario Draghi released a pivotal report on the Future of European Competitiveness. The report highlights that the EU struggles to deploy clean technologies at scale. Unlike China and the US, Europe lacks a decisive and comprehensive industrial and trade strategy to maintain its competitive edge while pursuing decarbonization. In this session, we will discuss how to build a “Made in Europe” cleantech industry.

What Can Cleantech Do for Europe’s Security? With General Tom Middendorp

In the first episode of the second season of Time to Scale, our executive director Jules Besnainou meets General Tom Middendorp, former Chief of Defense of the Netherlands and Chair of the International Military Council on Climate and Security. Together, they discuss the intersections of climate, security, and defense; the role of cleantech in addressing these challenges; and how to adapt to this new era by building resilient energy systems.

At the one-year mark of the new European Commission's mandate, Cleantech for Europe Summit 2025 brought together the highest levels of policy, cleantech and investment leaders to discuss a critical question for clean industry in Europe: To Lead or Not to Lead? It featured a keynote by Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, who highlighted the importance of keeping cleantech manufacturing in Europe and laying the foundation for EU leadership. The event closed with a fireside chat between Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra and cleantech veteran Jigar Shah discussing the necessary ingredients for achieving this leadership: demand creation, including with carbon pricing, financing and a stronger trade policy.

Cleantech for Europe also announced nine new members joining its Scale-up and Investor Coalitions.
