MEPs launch cross-party Friendship Group to promote cleantech

Yesterday (12 October), a new high-level initiative was launched by Members of the EuropeanParliament (MEPs). The Cleantech Friendship Group is a grouping of 16 MEPs cutting across political groups and representing all parts of the EU. They commit to work together to promote ambitious climate, energy, and economic policies to support innovative clean technologies and the next generation of industry and jobs.

The Cleantech Friendship Group aims to make cleantech a strategic priority in the public debate, create the policy conditions for these technologies to deploy at scale, and act as a centre of excellence connecting European cleantech leaders with EU policymakers to chart a common path to EU climate and industrial leadership.

The Cleantech Friendship Group is initiated by MEP Lídia Pereira (EPP) and MEP Mohammed Chahim (S&D). The kickoff event brought together MEPs and cleantech leaders from acrossEurope.

“There is strong momentum for the EU to lead the race to net zero while creating durable competitiveness and weaning ourselves off fossil fuels. To seize the moment and make it a European success story, the Cleantech Friendship Group joins forces between MEPs and cleantech leaders. Together, we will promote ambitious policies and enabling conditions for clean technologies to accelerate their effective deployment and support the next generation ofEU industry and jobs.”

This is the first time that EU policymakers come together to form a group designed to accelerate the development and deployment of clean technologies. This sends an unprecedented signal and will give confidence to cleantech innovators and investors across Europe.

Cleantech is crucial for achieving the EU’s climate, energy, and competitiveness goals. The IEA notes that at least half the decarbonisation needed by 2030 will have to come from not yet commercialised technologies. The Cleantech Friendship Group embodies a renewed commitment by EU legislators to engage more closely with in the cleantech community to rollout these technologies.
