EU 2040 target deal sets the stage for carbon pricing reforms in 2026

Changing the phaseout of free allowances and other moves to weaken the ETS lessens the incentive for large industrials to adopt clean technologies, says Cleantech for Europe executive director Jules Besnainou.

“The ETS is the backbone to creating demand for industrial clean tech in Europe,” he says.

“When polluting solutions become more expensive, clean solutions become even more competitive.”
